Marie Van Brittan Brown (October 30, 1922- February 02, 1999) was a nurse, as well as an inventor. Along with her husband, Albert Brown Brown, an electronics technician, invented a video home security system in 1966. that same year they applied for a patent for their security system, which was granted in 1969.

Although  U.S. Patent 3,482,037 was originally intended for domestic uses, many businesses began to adopt Brown’s system given its effectiveness. As a result of the innovation of a security system, she received an award from the National Science Committee,[3] officially making her a “part of an elite group of African-American inventors and scientists.
